UFC - Ultimate Fighting Championship

Ultimate Fighting Championship is the largest mixed martial arts company in the world
where all the
best MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighters from around the world fight in the octagon (the ring in the ufc has the shape of an octagon).

Key people in the UFC are the president Dana White who contacted his childhood friend Lorenzo Feritta about "buying" the UFC. Feritta quickly took the opportunity making the purchase a month later.

In 2011 UFC and FOX announced 7 year, 700 milion $ television rights deal.

 

UFC History

The First UFC event was held in 1993 in Denver Colorado. The goal of this event was to identify the best martial art in the world in a real fight between competitors from different martial art backgrounds including, boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Karate, Judo and many others.

 

Early competition 1990s (UFC 1)

The Ultimate Fighting Championship the beginning

Art Davie (the creator of UFC) proposed to John Milius (producer of Motion Pictures) and Rorion Graice an tournament called "War of the worlds" later called UFC 1.

The tournament, The Ultimate Fighting Championship (later called UFC 1) was inspired by Gracie family martial-arts video-series of various disciplines such as karate, kung fu, kickboxing.

The tournament would also feature martial artists from different disciplines in no holds barred combat to determine the best martial art.

The fighters at the tournament: kick-boxers Patrick Smith and Kevin Rosier, fighter Gerard Gordeau, karate expert Zane Fraizer, shoot-fighter Ken Shamrock, sumo wrestler Teila Tuli, boxer Art Jimmerson and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Royce Gracie.

The size vs technique

With no weight classes fighters often faced significantly larger and taller opponents. Many martial artist believed that technique could overcome these size disadvantages. Roy Gracie submission skills proved that statement, earning him the first ever UFC title.
